About Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are large, bulging, abnormal veins that occur on the legs. The exact cause of these unwanted and sometimes painful veins is uncertain, but they appear to have no function and their removal is safe and can sometimes even enhance circulation.

Varicose veins can bring out a number of unpleasant symptoms including aches and pains, fatigue of the leg including a general feeling of heaviness, itching, throbbing, swelling of the ankles, restless legs and night cramps. Multiple varicose veins may also create an unsightly appearance that may be bothersome.

There is not a single known cause of spider and varicose veins, but there are some factors that may contribute to their development. These factors include family history, female hormones (including those taken by prescription), trauma, age, obesity, pregnancy, standing for extended periods of time and exposure to the sun.

Although the exact causes are still unknown, it is thought that walking and maintaining a normal weight may help prevent the onset of varicose veins. If you do suffer from this condition, there are fortunately many different treatment options available.
